Kikuyu root-knot nematode
Meloidogyne kikuyensis
Description
Systematic position. Meloidogyne kikuyensis belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Rhabditida, and the family Meloidogynidae. It is a sedentary endoparasitic nematode that primarily affects the subterranean organs of host plants, leading to severe physiological damage and stunted growth.
Host range. This pest primarily targets a variety of herbaceous plants, with a significant preference for Solanaceous crops such as potatoes and tomatoes. Due to its adaptability, Meloidogyne kikuyensis can survive in diverse soil types, often persisting in the rhizosphere of both cultivated plants and certain wild weed species found in agricultural fields.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves a developmental shift from the vermiform second-stage juvenile (J2) to a sedentary, saccate adult female. Once inside the root, the J2 larva induces the formation of specialized "giant cells" within the vascular tissue. These cells serve as a metabolic sink, providing the nematode with essential nutrients for development and rapid egg production in gelatinous egg masses.
Nature of damage and pathogenicity. Damage is primarily mechanical and physiological, characterized by root galls that inhibit water and nutrient uptake.
- Formation of prominent galls (knots) on the root system.
- General yellowing and wilting of the foliage, especially during peak temperature periods.
- Reduced root system branching and proliferation.
- Significant reduction in crop yield and quality.
- Increased susceptibility to secondary soil-borne pathogens and root rot.
Control measures. Management of Meloidogyne kikuyensis requires a multifaceted strategy centered on sanitation and environmental manipulation. Crop rotation with non-host or antagonistic crops is crucial to break the nematode's life cycle. Furthermore, the application of chemical nematicides, soil solarization, and the use of resistant crop varieties remain the primary pillars of modern integrated pest management (IPM) to maintain low population levels.
