Description

Meloidogyne kralli is a microscopic soil-borne parasite belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This nematode species is a significant obligate plant parasite that specifically targets the root systems of a wide range of host plants, causing the formation of characteristic root galls or knots.

The pest poses a serious threat to various agricultural crops, particularly vegetable plants and certain graminaceous species. It frequently infests greenhouses and open-field crops, surviving in the soil and exploiting the root systems of susceptible weeds when primary crops are absent.

The life cycle of the nematode involves four larval stages within the egg and post-hatch development. Second-stage juveniles are the primary infective form, entering the plant roots and inducing the development of giant cells. These cells serve as a nutrient sink, allowing the sedentary female to develop and reproduce, laying eggs in a protective gelatinous matrix.

The primary symptom of damage is the development of galls on the roots, which disrupts the uptake of water and essential nutrients. Infected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and premature wilting during periods of high temperature, eventually leading to yield collapse and significant economic losses.

Management strategies require a multifaceted approach to be effective. Key practices include the implementation of rigorous crop rotation schemes, the use of certified nematode-free planting material, and soil solarization or steaming in indoor environments. Biological controls, such as fungal antagonists, and targeted nematicide applications are also employed to mitigate population densities.
