Taxonomic classification: Meloidogyne marylandi is a sedentary endoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is a specialized pathogen that establishes permanent feeding sites within the vascular tissues of its host plants.
Host plants: This nematode primarily infests monocotyledonous plants, with a strong affinity for grasses (Poaceae). It is recognized as a significant pest in turfgrass management, affecting golf courses, athletic fields, and various pasture grasses, often causing decline in high-maintenance lawns.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins with the second-stage juvenile (J2), which is the primary infective stage in the soil. Upon finding a suitable host, the J2 penetrates the root and initiates the formation of multinucleate giant cells. The nematode undergoes several molts, with the sedentary females becoming swollen and pear-shaped, subsequently laying eggs within a protective gelatinous matrix.
Damage and economic impact: Feeding by Meloidogyne marylandi leads to the development of root galls, which disrupt the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients.
