Small-bodied root-knot nematode

Meloidogyne microtyla is a species of obligate endoparasitic nematodes belonging to the family Meloidogynidae, order Tylenchida. These microscopic organisms are recognized as significant agricultural pests that primarily inhabit the root tissues of host plants. Their presence is often detected only after substantial physiological damage has already occurred within the host root system.

The host range of Meloidogyne microtyla includes various greenhouse vegetables, nursery stock, and ornamental plants. By diverting plant nutrients for their own growth and development, these nematodes act as major physiological sinks. This metabolic drain significantly reduces the overall vigor, biomass, and yield potential of infested agricultural crops.

The life cycle begins with the hatching of second-stage infective larvae (J2) in the soil. These larvae migrate toward the root tips and penetrate the cortex. Once established, they induce a feeding site, causing the plant to develop characteristic root galls (knots). The sedentary female remains within this gall, where she matures and deposits eggs, completing the reproductive phase of the cycle.

The primary damage caused by this pest is the proliferation of galls that disrupt the vascular tissue, effectively preventing the uptake of water and essential mineral nutrients. In addition to direct damage, the mechanical wounding of roots facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens, such as soil-borne fungi and bacteria, leading to root rot and premature senescence of the plants.

Effective management and control strategies are essential to minimize losses:

• Practicing strict hygiene and sanitation in production areas to prevent the spread of soil contaminants.
• Implementing long-term crop rotation schemes using non-host plants to reduce nematode population levels.
• Utilizing soil solarization or thermal treatments before planting in infested areas.
• Monitoring plant growth closely and destroying heavily infested root debris to prevent further soil re-contamination.
