Description

Systematic position. The minor root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne minor, belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This obligate endoparasite is a significant soil-borne pathogen that primarily targets the root systems of various host plants, causing substantial agricultural losses.

Affected crops. The nematode has a diverse host range, including various vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and tomatoes. Additionally, it is known to infest turf grasses, making it a problematic pest in lawns, golf courses, and agricultural fields where cereal crops are rotated with vegetables.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle involves an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. Second-stage juveniles (J2) infect roots, where they stimulate the development of galls by affecting the host cell physiology. Females remain inside the root tissue, producing egg masses that serve as the primary source of infestation for the next generation.

Damage and economic impact. Infestation is characterized by the formation of small galls on the roots, which disrupt water and nutrient uptake. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting during periods of moisture stress. Significant yield losses and reduced crop quality occur as the root system fails to support normal plant development.

Management strategies. Effective management relies on a combination of cultural and preventive practices. Key measures include using certified nematode-free planting stock, implementing crop rotation, and maintaining strict sanitary practices to prevent the spread of contaminated soil. Chemical control with nematicides can be utilized, but integrated pest management remains the most sustainable approach.
