The barley root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne naasi) is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is a microscopic soil-borne pathogen that primarily affects the roots of various monocotyledonous plants, causing significant economic losses in cereal-producing regions globally, particularly in areas with temperate climates.

The host range of this nematode is largely centered on cereals, including barley, wheat, rye, and oats. It also shows an affinity for sugar beet and various wild grasses. The nematode establishes itself by invading the root tips of young plants, triggering physiological changes in the plant cells that lead to the formation of specialized feeding sites known as giant cells.

The biological cycle begins when second-stage juveniles (J2) hatch from eggs in the soil and move towards the roots. Once inside, they induce the development of galls, which are visible swellings on the root system. Within these galls, the nematodes develop into sedentary, swollen females. The reproductive cycle is usually completed once per year in colder regions, but it can be more rapid under favorable weather conditions.

The damage caused by Meloidogyne naasi is manifested by the characteristic galls on the roots, which disrupt the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients. Infected crops typically show stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and wilting, especially during dry periods. In severe infestations, the yield reduction can be substantial, and entire fields may appear patchy with poor plant development.

Effective management requires an integrated approach due to the difficulty of soil treatment. Key strategies include:

  • Crop rotation with non-host crops to starve the nematode population in the soil.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal of infested crop debris and weed control.
  • The use of resistant or tolerant cultivars where available.
  • Soil management practices that improve plant vigor, allowing the host to compensate for partial root damage.
