Description

The rice root-knot nematode Meloidogyne oryzae is classified within the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Rhabditida, and family Meloidogynidae. It is a highly specialized plant-parasitic nematode that induces significant physiological stress in rice crops by attacking their root architecture.

The primary host for this parasite is the rice plant (Oryza sativa). It is a major concern in paddy fields, where the unique aquatic environment facilitates the migration of larvae and the spread of infestations across vast agricultural areas.

The life cycle begins with eggs deposited inside the root tissues. Upon hatching, second-stage juveniles emerge and penetrate the host roots near the root tip. They become sedentary, feed on the vascular tissue, and cause the formation of characteristic root galls. The female matures within the root, often protruding slightly from the surface to release egg masses.

Infested plants exhibit severe symptoms, including yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and a diminished root system with visible swellings or galls. The damage results in reduced nutrient uptake and water transport, which severely impairs the crop's development and can lead to total yield failure if not managed correctly.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for control. These include
