Meloidogyne oteifai is classified within the Nematoda phylum, Chromadorea class, Rhabditida order, and Meloidogynidae family. This species is a highly specialized plant-parasitic nematode known for causing significant damage to agricultural crops by inducing gall formation on the root systems, which disrupts the host plant's vital nutrient uptake.

The host range of Meloidogyne oteifai includes several economically important vegetable crops, primarily members of the Solanaceae and Fabaceae families. These nematodes thrive in warm environments, making them particularly destructive in greenhouse conditions and subtropical agricultural zones where they can survive and reproduce throughout the year.

The life cycle begins with the second-stage juvenile (J2), which is the infective form that searches for suitable root sites. Once a host root is located, the nematode penetrates the tissue, becomes sedentary, and initiates a feeding site by causing cell hypertrophy. This interaction between the nematode and the host plant leads to the characteristic formation of root-knots or galls.

Damage caused by this nematode is severe, as the galls obstruct the transport of water and nutrients from the roots to the aerial parts of the plant. Symptoms include stunted growth, chlorosis, wilting during peak sunlight hours, and a significant reduction in fruit set and biomass. In heavily infested soils, the cumulative damage can lead to total crop failure.

Effective management strategies involve an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key tactics include using nematode-free certified planting material, implementing crop rotation with non-host or trap crops, and ensuring rigorous sanitation of soil and tools. Chemical or biological nematicides may be employed, but preventative cultural practices, such as solarization or steaming of soil in greenhouses, remain the most sustainable solutions.
