Otterson gall nematode

Meloidogyne ottersoni belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. As a sedentary endoparasite, it spends most of its life cycle within the roots of host plants. This species is known for its ability to induce significant morphological changes in the root system of its hosts to facilitate its nutritional needs.

The primary hosts for this nematode are various sedge species (Cyperaceae). However, in an agricultural context, its presence is a concern due to the risk of cross-infestation in adjacent crops, especially in wetland environments or fields with high moisture content, which are ideal for the nematode's survival and mobility.

The biological cycle of the nematode involves several larval stages. The second-stage juveniles (J2) are the primary infective form that migrates through the soil to locate a suitable root tip. Upon entry, they trigger the formation of multinucleate giant cells and external galls. These structures serve as a dedicated nutrient source for the developing female, which eventually produces eggs contained within a protective gelatinous matrix.

Damage caused by Meloidogyne ottersoni is primarily systemic. Infested plants exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting, as the distorted roots lose their capacity for efficient water and nutrient uptake. Over time, the root system may succumb to secondary pathogens, leading to premature plant death and significant yield losses.

Management strategies require a combination of preventative and curative measures. Crop rotation remains the most effective long-term strategy, replacing susceptible hosts with non-host species. Furthermore, soil management, including solarization, the use of chemical nematicides, and rigorous weed control, is essential to suppress population density below the economic threshold of injury.
