Meloidogyne ovalis is a microscopic plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This pathogen is known for its obligate parasitic nature, relying entirely on host plants for survival and reproduction. Its name reflects the distinct oval morphology of the adult female, which remains sedentary within the root tissues.
This nematode species is primarily associated with a variety of vegetable and horticultural crops. It thrives in soils where host plants are grown continuously, making it a significant challenge for greenhouse operations and intensive agricultural systems. It often attacks the roots of susceptible species, reducing the overall vigor and productivity of the infested crops.
The life cycle begins with eggs laid in a gelatinous matrix. Second-stage juveniles are the primary infective form, moving through the soil film to locate plant roots. Upon penetration, they establish a feeding site by triggering the formation of giant cells within the root tissue. This biological manipulation allows the nematode to feed and develop into its mature form.
Damage caused by this nematode is characterized by the formation of galls (knots) on the root system. These structures disrupt the plant's ability to uptake essential water and nutrients, leading to stunting, wilting during peak sunlight hours, and premature senescence. Affected plants often exhibit reduced yields and lower quality of harvested fruits or tubers.
Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach to limit population buildup:
