Pea root-knot nematode

Taxonomic position. Meloidogyne pisi, commonly known as the pea root-knot nematode, belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is a microscopic, sedentary endoparasite that primarily infects the roots of host plants, causing distinct physiological disturbances within the vascular system.

Affected crops and damage. The primary host is the field pea, although other legumes may also serve as hosts. The infestation leads to stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and reduced plant vigor. In severe cases, the entire crop may suffer from poor development and yield loss, as the nematodes effectively hijack the plant's resources for their own development.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves survival in the soil and development within the roots. Second-stage juveniles penetrate the roots, initiating the formation of galls. Inside these galls, the nematodes feed and develop into adults. The females produce egg masses that remain within or protrude from the root tissue, eventually hatching into new juveniles that continue the cycle.

Nature of damage. The hallmark of Meloidogyne pisi infection is the presence of characteristic root galls (swellings). These deformations disrupt the movement of water and essential nutrients from the roots to the shoots. The damage to the root architecture weakens the plant, making it significantly more susceptible to drought and other environmental stresses.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this nematode:

• Implementation of long-term crop rotations using non-host crops to starve the nematode population.
• Use of certified, nematode-free seeds for planting.
• Thorough field hygiene, including the removal of infected root residues after harvest.
• Application of bio-nematicides or chemical soil fumigants where appropriate to reduce nematode density in the soil profile.
