Meloidogyne polycephannulata is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Meloidogynidae. This species exhibits significant sexual dimorphism. Adult females are sessile, pear-shaped endoparasites residing within root tissues, while the second-stage juveniles are highly mobile, active in searching for suitable host roots for invasion.

The pest demonstrates broad ecological plasticity, primarily affecting vegetable crops such as Solanaceae (tomatoes, peppers) and cucurbits, as well as various ornamental plants. It thrives in warm regions with temperate climates, where it can complete its life cycle throughout the year, particularly in greenhouse conditions with stable temperatures.

The life cycle begins with eggs deposited into a gelatinous matrix (egg mass). Upon hatching, the juveniles penetrate the roots near the root tips. As they feed on host cells, they secrete specific compounds that trigger cell hypertrophy and hyperplasia, leading to the development of characteristic root galls. Optimal conditions for multiplication include high soil moisture and temperatures ranging from +20°C to +28°C.

Symptoms of infestation include stunted plant growth, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), and sudden wilting during peak sunlight hours. Examination of the root system reveals severe deformation with numerous galls of varying sizes. This damage disrupts nutrient and water uptake, leading to substantial yield losses and potentially total crop failure in highly infested areas.
