Root-knot nematode Meloidogyne propora
Meloidogyne propora
Description
Meloidogyne propora is a species of parasitic roundworms from the family Meloidogynidae, belonging to the order Tylenchida. This pest is a specialized plant parasite that infests the root systems of a wide range of agricultural crops, causing the formation of specific growths known as galls. This nematode species is considered a dangerous quarantine pest capable of significantly reducing yields in both greenhouse and open-field conditions.
The primary hosts of Meloidogyne propora are vegetable crops, particularly members of the Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae families. The nematode penetrates the root tissues, where it induces hyperplasia and hypertrophy of cells, forming root-knot galls. As a result, the normal uptake of water and nutrients to the aerial parts of the plant is impaired, leading to stunted growth, chlorosis, and premature wilting.
The life cycle of the pest includes an egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. Invasive second-stage larvae enter the soil, locate the host plant's roots, and penetrate the tissues to begin feeding. Mature females exhibit a characteristic pear-shaped form and remain stationary within the gall, depositing eggs into a protective gelatinous matrix that shields them from adverse environmental factors.
The damage caused by Meloidogyne propora involves severe destruction of the root system. At high population densities, widespread necrosis of fine root hairs and tissue decay occurs, often exacerbated by secondary bacterial infections. Affected plants show delayed development, poor root architecture, and a dramatic drop in productivity; in cases of heavy infestation, total plant mortality can occur.
Control measures are based on strict adherence to phytosanitary regulations and crop rotation practices. Effective strategies include:
- Using healthy, certified planting material and virus-free seedlings.
- Implementing soil heat treatment or using effective fumigants in greenhouse production.
- Incorporating antagonist crops such as mustard or marigolds into the rotation.
- Regular disinfection of tools and containers to prevent the spread of cysts and larvae.
- Applying biological control agents based on nematophagous fungi to suppress the parasite population.
