Meloidogyne salasi is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This species is recognized as a significant pathogen affecting rice crops, particularly in regions where environmental conditions favor the rapid proliferation of root-knot nematodes.

The primary host for this nematode is rice (Oryza sativa). Unlike polyphagous species, Meloidogyne salasi shows a distinct affinity for rice, making it a critical concern for sustainable rice production in infested areas. The pest is particularly adapted to the aquatic or semi-aquatic conditions characteristic of rice paddies.

The life cycle begins when second-stage juveniles (J2) emerge from eggs and migrate through the soil to penetrate the roots of host plants. Once inside, they induce the formation of specialized feeding sites known as galls or knots. The female nematodes become sedentary within these galls, feeding on the plant tissue and depositing large masses of eggs.
