Description

The Meloidogyne sasseri belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Meloidogynidae. These endoparasitic roundworms are notorious for establishing specialized feeding sites within the root tissues of their host plants. As a highly adaptive pathogen, it can thrive in various soil types, posing a significant threat to agricultural productivity in infested regions.

The nematode has a wide host range, primarily targeting vegetable crops, certain ornamental plants, and various weeds that act as alternate hosts. By invading the vascular system of the roots, the nematodes divert essential nutrients and water away from the plant, directly impacting yield and quality. Continuous cultivation of susceptible hosts without proper rotation often leads to an exponential increase in the population density of these pests.

The life cycle involves several developmental stages, starting from eggs, through four juvenile stages, and finally reaching the adult phase. The second-stage juvenile (J2) is the infective form that actively navigates through the soil to locate a suitable root tip for penetration. Once established, the female remains stationary and undergoes a metamorphosis, forming the characteristic gall structures that house subsequent generations.

Symptoms of infestation are easily identified by observing the root system.

  • Formation of characteristic root galls (knots).
  • Stunted growth of the plant canopy.
  • Yellowing of leaves and signs of nutrient deficiency.
  • Reduced root mass and impaired water uptake capacity.
These visible signs are often accompanied by a decline in overall plant vigor and increased susceptibility to other soil-borne diseases.

Effective management strategy requires an integrated approach to minimize soil population levels. Key practices include systematic crop rotation using non-host or antagonistic crops to starve the nematode population, meticulous sanitation by removing root debris post-harvest, and the use of soil solarization in greenhouses. Biological control agents, including beneficial bacteria and fungi, are also increasingly utilized to suppress nematode activity in an environmentally friendly manner.
