Description
Meloidogyne sewelli is a significant plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Meloidogynidae. These microscopic roundworms are sedentary endoparasites that have evolved to live inside the roots of their host plants. As a major threat to agricultural productivity, they are often responsible for substantial yield losses in both open field and greenhouse production systems worldwide.
This nematode species attacks a variety of host plants, particularly vegetables and crops with high economic value. The presence of Meloidogyne sewelli is particularly devastating to root systems, as the infestation impairs the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals, leading to stunting, chlorosis, and reduced overall crop vigor.
The life cycle of this pest is highly efficient. Infective second-stage juveniles emerge from eggs in the soil, move toward the root tips of susceptible plants, and penetrate the tissue. Once inside, they induce the formation of specialized giant cells upon which they feed. Above-ground symptoms often mimic nutrient deficiencies or water stress. Since the plant is struggling to transport nutrients from the root system to the leaves and fruits, the entire metabolism of the host plant is disrupted, leading to stunted growth and reduced fruit quality.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to handle Meloidogyne sewelli infestations. Key strategies include:
- Rigorous sanitation practices to prevent the spread of infested soil.
- The use of nematode-free certified planting material.
- Crop rotation with non-host or antagonistic cover crops.
- Application of soil solarization or biological control agents.
In cases of severe infestation, chemical nematicides may be necessary, but their use should be strictly regulated. Regular soil monitoring and root inspection are critical for early detection and to mitigate the long-term impact on soil health and production cycles.
