Forest root-knot nematode

Systematic position: The forest root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne silvestris, belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Rhabditida, and the family Meloidogynidae. It is a specialized microscopic endoparasite that completes its life cycle within the root tissues of host woody plants.

Host plants: Unlike common agricultural species, Meloidogyne silvestris primarily affects forestry species. Its host range includes various deciduous and coniferous trees, making it a significant concern for forest nurseries and reforestation projects where saplings can become stunted if infested.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle encompasses the egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. Second-stage juveniles are the primary infective forms that penetrate the root tissues. Once inside, females induce the formation of giant cells, which serve as a specialized feeding site, and eventually develop into sessile, pear-shaped adults producing eggs within gelatinous masses.

Damage and economic significance: The most visible sign of infestation is the formation of galls (knots) on the roots, caused by the parasite's feeding. These galls interfere with root uptake of water and nutrients, resulting in nutrient deficiencies, reduced growth rates, and increased susceptibility to drought and secondary pathogens, which can ultimately lead to tree mortality.

Protection measures: Managing this nematode requires integrated pest management strategies to mitigate damage in forestry settings:

• Using certified nematode-free planting stock for reforestation.
• Implementing long-term crop rotation or fallowing in nursery plots.
• Soil solarization or steam treatment to reduce populations in high-value nurseries.
• Application of biological control agents, such as nematode-trapping fungi or antagonistic bacteria.
• Strict hygiene protocols to prevent the spread of infested soil between nursery compartments.
