Suginamiensis root-knot nematode

The Meloidogyne suginamiensis species belongs to the Tylenchida order and the Meloidogynidae family. It is a highly specialized plant-parasitic nematode recognized for its ability to infest the root systems of specific plant hosts. As an obligate endoparasite, it relies entirely on the successful manipulation of host plant tissues to complete its biological cycle.

The host range of this nematode includes specific woody plants and various agricultural crops. By invading the roots, the nematode initiates a complex physiological response within the plant, transforming normal cells into multinucleate giant cells. These cells act as a vital nutrient sink, supporting the growth and development of the female nematode.

The life cycle begins with the second-stage juvenile (J2), which emerges from the egg and migrates through the soil to locate a suitable root site. Once infection occurs, the J2 settles and undergoes sedentary development. The female remains in a swollen, pear-shaped state within the root, depositing eggs into a gelatinous matrix to ensure their survival and protection against environmental stress.

Visible damage is characterized by the formation of root-knot galls, which significantly disrupt the vascular system of the plant. This disruption leads to restricted water and nutrient uptake, causing symptoms such as stunting, chlorosis, and wilting. If left untreated, the damage can severely compromise the plant's structural integrity and overall vigor, leading to substantial yield losses.

Effective management and control strategies comprise the following:
