Description
The Thai root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne thailandica) belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This microscopic soil-borne pest is a significant threat to global agriculture, specializing in parasitizing the root systems of various economically important plants.
It predominantly infests solanaceous crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The nematode is particularly problematic in greenhouses where warm conditions and continuous cropping cycles provide an ideal environment for population buildup throughout the growing season.
The biological cycle involves the invasion of roots by second-stage larvae, which induce the formation of giant cells within the host tissue. The nematode remains sedentary within the root, feeding and developing into an adult. Reproduction is efficient, and a single female can produce hundreds of eggs, ensuring rapid infestation of the soil.
Damages are characterized by visible galls or knots on the root systems. These structures disrupt the vascular system of the plant, preventing the uptake of water and nutrients. Infected plants exhibit symptoms such as stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and wilting, especially under water stress, leading to substantial yield losses.
Management of Meloidogyne thailandica requires an integrated approach. Essential practices include crop rotation with non-host plants and the use of nematode-free planting material. Chemical control using soil fumigants or systemic nematicides is often necessary in high-pressure areas. Furthermore, soil solarization is an effective non-chemical method for reducing nematode density.
