Description
Meloidogyne thamesi is a serious plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. As an endoparasite, it penetrates the roots of host plants, causing cellular changes that result in the formation of galls, which significantly disrupt the plant's vascular system.
This nematode has a wide host range, posing a threat to various vegetables and ornamental crops. It is particularly destructive to potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers, thriving in sandy soils and protected cultivation environments where temperatures are favorable for its development.
The life cycle begins when second-stage juveniles invade the roots, settle, and initiate feeding. As they mature, the sedentary females become obese and lay eggs in a gelatinous matrix. These eggs hatch into mobile juveniles that migrate through the soil to infect new root tissues, ensuring a rapid spread of the infestation.
The economic damage caused by this pest is significant. Infested plants exhibit stunted growth, wilting, chlorosis, and reduced yields. In severe cases, the entire root system may become deformed and necrotic, leading to complete plant failure and loss of marketability of the produce.
