Clover root-knot nematode
Meloidogyne trifoliophila
Description
Systematic position of this pest is within the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, and the family Meloidogynidae. The Meloidogyne trifoliophila species belongs to the group of sedentary endoparasitic nematodes known as root-knot nematodes, which are highly specialized to parasitize the roots of host plants.
Affected crops are primarily members of the Fabaceae family, with clover (Trifolium) being the main host plant. Due to its host specificity, this nematode poses a particular threat to clover fields, forage production, and legume-based pastures, where it can remain persistent in the soil for extended periods if conditions remain favorable.
Biology and life cycle are centered on the root tissues. Infective second-stage juveniles penetrate the root tips and migrate to the vascular cylinder. Once settled, the females become sedentary, inducing the plant cells to form large, nutrient-rich giant cells. This leads to the characteristic root swellings, known as galls, within which the female feeds and produces eggs for subsequent generations.
Damage symptoms and pest impact are primarily visible as stunted plant growth and overall loss of vigor. The formation of galls disrupts the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients. Infected plants often show signs of nutrient deficiency, premature wilting, and reduced biomass production, which eventually leads to significant yield losses in hay or pasture stands.
Control measures require a holistic integrated pest management strategy. Key methods include:
- Crop rotation with non-host species (e.g., cereals or grasses) to starve the nematode population.
- Using certified, nematode-free seeds to prevent field infestation.
- Soil solarization in controlled environments to reduce larval density.
- Application of biological control agents, such as nematode-trapping fungi or antagonistic bacteria.
- Proper sanitation of farming equipment to avoid spreading infested soil between fields.
