Rice root-knot nematode

Meloidogyne triticoryzae

Description

Meloidogyne triticoryzae is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This microscopic pest is a specialized phytoparasite that primarily targets the root systems of cereal crops. It poses a significant phytosanitary challenge in regions where rice and wheat are intensively cultivated.

The primary hosts for this nematode species are rice and wheat, as suggested by its scientific name. In addition to these major crops, the nematode can survive on various grassy weeds, which serve as alternative hosts. The spread of the pest occurs mainly through the movement of infested soil, water, and contaminated agricultural implements or infected seed stock.

The biological cycle of the nematode is typical for the Meloidogyne genus. Second-stage juveniles (J2) hatch from eggs and penetrate the roots of host plants. Once established inside the root tissue, they induce the formation of giant cells, which supply the nematode with nutrients. The resulting physiological changes in the root lead to the development of characteristic knots or galls, within which adult females deposit their egg masses.

The damage caused by Meloidogyne triticoryzae is primarily manifested by root deformation and the inhibition of water and nutrient uptake. Infected plants typically show symptoms of chlorosis, stunting, and reduced tillering. In severe infestations, the crop yield can be significantly reduced, and the plants become more susceptible to other soil-borne diseases and environmental stress factors.

Effective control strategies require a combination of preventative and curative measures. Agronomic practices such as crop rotation, the use of resistant varieties, and proper sanitation are essential to suppress nematode populations. Additionally, the integrated pest management (IPM) approach includes maintaining soil fertility and moisture levels to help plants compensate for root damage, as well as the targeted use of nematocides if necessary.
