Grape root-knot nematode

Meloidogyne vitis

Description

The Grape root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne vitis) is a significant plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is a highly specialized sedentary endoparasite that primarily targets the root systems of grapevine varieties, causing substantial physiological stress to the host plants.

This pest is primarily found infesting cultivated grapevines (Vitis vinifera) and certain hybrid rootstocks. It is particularly problematic in nurseries where its presence can go unnoticed in the root system, subsequently leading to the spread of the nematode to newly established commercial vineyards.

The life cycle begins with the second-stage juveniles (J2) moving through the soil to locate a suitable root tip. Upon penetration, they establish a permanent feeding site. Within the roots, they induce the development of specialized "giant cells," which serve as a nutrient source. This leads to the formation of characteristic galls or knots on the root structure.

The severity of damage is linked to the disruption of the root's vascular system. The presence of galls prevents the efficient transport of water and nutrients, resulting in stunted shoot growth, nutrient deficiencies, and reduced yield. Heavily infested vines exhibit severe wilting during periods of high temperature, eventually leading to plant decline and death.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to reduce population levels below the damage threshold:

  • Utilizing resistant or tolerant rootstock varieties.
  • Strict quarantine and inspection protocols for nursery planting material.
  • Implementing appropriate soil management, including cover crops that act as natural suppressants.
  • Chemical treatment with nematicides or biological control agents (e.g., antagonistic fungi and bacteria) in heavily infested soil.
