Rose curculio

The rose curculio (Merhynchites bicolor) is a prominent member of the Attelabidae family of beetles. Recognizable by its distinct red elytra and dark head, this weevil is a significant pest that specializes in damaging the buds of roses and related plant species in the Rosaceae family.

This beetle primarily affects cultivated roses and wild rose bushes. When populations are high, they may also move onto orchard crops such as apples, pears, and raspberries. They feed on the tender tissues, which leads to stunted growth and significant aesthetic damage to flowering shrubs.

The life cycle of this pest involves an annual generation. Adult weevils emerge in the spring, coinciding with the development of flower buds. After feeding, females drill holes into the buds to lay their eggs. A signature behavior involves severing the stem of the bud, causing it to wilt, drop to the ground, and provide a protected environment for the larvae.

The damage caused by Merhynchites bicolor is both direct and indirect. Adults create multiple puncture wounds in developing buds, preventing the flowers from blooming correctly. If the buds do open, they are often riddled with holes and disfigured. The larvae feed internally, consuming the reproductive structures of the plant.
