The red-tailed gerbil (Meriones erythrourus) is a member of the Rodentia order and the Cricetidae family. As a highly adaptive rodent found in arid and semi-arid environments, it is considered a significant agricultural pest. These rodents are well-known for their burrowing habits and high metabolic activity, which necessitates a constant supply of plant-based food sources.

The species causes extensive damage to a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals (wheat, barley), pulses, and oilseeds. Furthermore, they are notorious for destroying seedlings of various vegetable crops and damaging alfalfa fields. They consume the green parts of plants and store large quantities of seeds within their extensive underground burrow systems.

Regular monitoring of burrow activity levels is crucial to determining the timing and intensity of control actions to prevent mass outbreaks.
