Persian jird

The Persian jird (Meriones persicus) is a rodent belonging to the Cricetidae family. Commonly found in arid and mountainous regions, this species has adapted to survive in harsh environments. In agricultural settings, it is recognized as a significant pest capable of causing substantial damage to both standing crops and stored agricultural products.

These rodents feed on a wide variety of plant materials, including green shoots, leaves, and various types of seeds. They are known to cause major economic losses in wheat, barley, and legume fields, especially during the germination stage. Vegetable gardens and orchards are also susceptible to damage when the jirds move into cultivated areas searching for consistent food supplies.

The biology of the Persian jird is defined by its social structure and reproductive capacity. They live in large colonies, constructing complex burrow systems that provide protection against extreme temperatures and predators. With multiple litters produced throughout the warmer months, the population can expand rapidly, making infestation management a continuous challenge for farmers.

The damage caused by Persian jirds is characterized by both direct consumption and physical disruption of the crop. They frequently gnaw on roots and stems, leading to the collapse of young plants. Furthermore, their burrowing activities disturb soil structure and can damage the root systems of perennial crops, while their habit of caching food in burrows leads to significant post-harvest and pre-harvest losses.

Effective control measures require an integrated pest management approach. Deep plowing of fields is recommended to destroy burrow systems and reduce colony density. When populations reach economic injury levels, the application of targeted rodenticides within the burrows is the most efficient method to suppress the numbers while minimizing the risk to non-target species. Maintaining clean fields by removing tall weeds helps to eliminate hiding spots for these rodents.
