Mongolian gerbil

The Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) is a small rodent belonging to the family Cricetidae, order Rodentia. Within agricultural landscapes, this species exhibits high adaptability, frequently colonizing fields and pastures where it is considered a pest due to its destructive foraging habits and burrowing activities.

This pest poses a serious threat to a variety of commercial crops. It primarily targets grain crops, pulses, sunflower, and vegetable plantings. By consuming seedlings, severing roots, and hoarding grains during the harvest season, the gerbil causes substantial reductions in agricultural yields and disrupts plant growth uniformity.

The biology of the Mongolian gerbil is defined by its high reproductive rate and sophisticated burrowing behavior. These rodents construct complex tunnel systems that serve as both dwellings and storage chambers for gathered food. They remain active throughout the year, even in cooler temperatures, by relying on subterranean food caches established during the peak growing season.

Damage symptoms are easily identified by barren patches in fields and mounds of excavated soil. Beyond direct consumption of plants, their burrowing activity disturbs the soil structure, leading to increased erosion and mechanical interference with harvesting equipment. Furthermore, the presence of large populations can lead to the degradation of pasture quality and potential health hazards.

Protection and control strategies require an integrated management approach. Mechanical control, such as deep plowing, is highly effective at disrupting burrow integrity and discouraging colonization. Chemical control via targeted rodenticide applications should be conducted strictly according to safety protocols. Sustainable management also involves maintaining clean field margins to limit nesting sites and encouraging the presence of natural predators such as birds of prey.
