Description
The large narcissus fly (Merodon equestris) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Syrphidae. Unlike most members of the hoverfly family, which are beneficial, this specific species is a destructive pest that targets various geophytes, particularly those in the Amaryllidaceae family.
The primary host plants include daffodils (Narcissus), but the larvae also attack tulips, hyacinths, leucojum, and galanthus. Infestation often goes unnoticed until the plant fails to thrive in the spring, leading to sudden decline or the total loss of the bulb clump.
The life cycle consists of a single generation per year. Adult flies emerge in late spring and early summer, resembling bumblebees in size and appearance. Females lay eggs on or near the host plant. The hatching larvae bore into the bulb, typically through the basal plate, where they feed on the internal tissues, causing significant structural damage.
The damage is highly injurious: larvae hollow out the center of the bulb, which frequently leads to the entry of secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens. The resulting rot destroys the bulb completely. Infected plants are characterized by stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and a lack of flower production during the subsequent growing season.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and cultural practices. Growers should inspect and cull any soft bulbs before planting. Post-planting measures include firming the soil around the base of the stems to prevent females from reaching the bulb, and the use of insecticidal dips for susceptible bulb stock to eliminate young larvae.
