Narcissus fly

Systematic position: The Narcissus fly (Merodon rufus) is a member of the Diptera order and the Syrphidae family. While many Syrphids are known as beneficial hoverflies that aid pollination, members of the genus Merodon are significant pests that cause damage to ornamental bulbous plants.

Crops: The primary hosts for this pest are plants belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. The Narcissus (daffodil) is the most common target, but the pest can also infest hyacinths, tulips, and snowdrops. High concentrations of bulbs in ornamental gardens provide an ideal environment for the fly to thrive.

Biology and life cycle: Adult flies are active during late spring and early summer, typically from May through July. Females lay eggs near the base of the bulb or in the soil surface. After hatching, the larvae burrow into the bulb to feed on the inner tissues. The larvae spend most of their development inside the bulb, which serves as both their food source and protection, before pupating in the soil near the host plant.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The damage is caused by the larval stage, which hollows out the bulb, destroying the basal plate and developing flower buds. Affected plants show signs of stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and reduced flowering. In many cases, infested bulbs become susceptible to secondary infections by bacteria and fungi, leading to total rot and the loss of the plant.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential to minimize damage:

• Inspect bulbs before planting and discard any that feel soft at the base.
• Perform hot water treatment on bulbs to kill larvae without harming the plant.
• Apply soil-drenching insecticides during the adult flight period to prevent egg-laying.
• Maintain soil hygiene by removing and destroying infested bulbs immediately upon discovery.
• Use physical barriers like fine netting or mulching to obstruct the fly's access to the bulb neck.
