Description
Mesochorus is a large genus of wasps belonging to the family Ichneumonidae within the order Hymenoptera. Unlike primary pests that feed on plant tissues, these insects are known as hyperparasitoids. They do not damage crops directly but exert a significant impact on the ecosystem of the field.
The primary biological role of Mesochorus is parasitic. They target the larvae of other parasitoids (such as braconids or tachinid flies) that have already infested agricultural pests like caterpillars. By killing these primary parasitoids, they effectively negate the benefits of biological control agents that farmers rely on to keep pest populations in check.
The life cycle involves the female wasp locating a host—a primary parasitoid—inside a lepidopteran larva. The egg is deposited directly into the host's body. The developing Mesochorus larva consumes the internal tissues of the primary parasitoid, ensuring its own survival while eliminating the beneficial insect that would have controlled the crop pest.
The economic impact of this genus is mainly seen in the disruption of natural pest regulation. In seasons or fields where hyperparasitism is high, the mortality rate of harmful insects decreases because their natural enemies are decimated by Mesochorus. This creates a secondary pest pressure that can lead to unexpected crop damage.
Effective management strategies should focus on balancing the ecosystem. Avoiding the overuse of broad-spectrum insecticides is crucial to allow primary parasitoids to flourish. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, such as maintaining wildflower strips to provide habitats for both primary and secondary parasitoids, are recommended to maintain natural biodiversity and suppress pest outbreaks.
