Mesochorus nigripes is a parasitic wasp belonging to the family Ichneumonidae and the order Hymenoptera. This species is widely recognized in entomology as a hyperparasitoid, meaning it targets other parasitic insects that are themselves parasitizing primary agricultural pests.
It typically affects crops indirectly by reducing the efficacy of biological control agents in agroecosystems. By parasitizing primary parasitoids (such as Braconidae or other Ichneumonidae) that attack larvae of various moths and caterpillars, Mesochorus nigripes can inadvertently allow populations of primary pests on cereals, vegetables, and fruit crops to escalate unchecked.
The life cycle of this species is highly specialized. The female searches for host larvae that are already infested by primary parasitoids. She then oviposits inside the primary parasite larva. The Mesochorus nigripes larva develops by consuming the internal organs of its host, eventually killing it before emerging as an adult. This process ensures the survival of the hyperparasitoid at the expense of beneficial natural enemies.
