Mesochorus noxius

Mesochorus noxius is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Ichneumonidae (order Hymenoptera). In agricultural entomology, it is recognized as a harmful species because it acts as a hyperparasitoid. Unlike typical parasitoids that control crop-destroying insects, this species attacks and kills other beneficial parasitoids, thereby undermining biological control efforts within the ecosystem.

This insect is primarily associated with cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and rye. Its presence within a field directly threatens the natural stability of the agroecosystem. By reducing the populations of primary parasitoids, it indirectly allows primary pests, such as cereal aphids or leaf miners, to thrive, leading to increased pressure on the crops.

The biological cycle of this wasp is complex and depends on the presence of primary parasitoids. The female adult inserts an egg into the larva of a primary parasitoid that is already living inside a host caterpillar or fly larva. The offspring of Mesochorus noxius then consumes the beneficial larva from within, effectively eliminating the biocontrol agent before it can reach adulthood.

By disrupting the complex food webs in cereal fields, it allows for pest outbreaks that would otherwise be contained by natural predators and parasitoids.
