The common hamster (family Cricetidae, order Rodentia) is a significant agricultural pest that inhabits grasslands and cultivated fields. Known for its robust physique and burrowing habits, it presents a serious challenge to farmers, particularly in grain-producing regions where it can rapidly destroy large sections of a field.
This rodent is highly polyphagous, causing damage to a wide range of crops including wheat, barley, maize, sunflowers, and leguminous vegetables. It is particularly destructive during the pre-harvest phase, as it consumes growing plants and actively harvests seeds to store in subterranean food chambers.
The biological cycle of the common hamster involves nocturnal activity and periods of hibernation during winter.
