Mesovelia

Mesovelia is a genus of insects belonging to the family Mesoveliidae, within the order Hemiptera. These small, semi-aquatic bugs are primarily found on the surface of still or slow-moving water bodies, where they navigate the surface film with ease due to their specialized, hair-covered legs.

In agricultural settings, Mesovelia species are frequently associated with irrigated crops, particularly rice paddies. They live among aquatic weeds and vegetation, which serve as both a habitat and a nursery for their offspring, providing protection from predators and environmental fluctuations.

The damage caused by Mesovelia results from their feeding habits; they pierce plant tissues to extract sap. Continuous feeding on young stems and leaves can cause localized necrosis, stunting, and reduced vigor of the crop, potentially impacting overall yield if the pest population remains unchecked.
