These small insects are common in aquatic ecosystems, moving across the surface film of standing or slow-moving water. In agriculture, they are recognized as occasional pests that can affect hydroponic systems and various aquatic-based crops.

The host range of Mesovelia furcata includes several species of hydrophytes and crops grown in high-moisture environments. While they primarily feed on small invertebrates, they also engage in piercing plant tissues to extract sap, which becomes a significant issue when populations reach high densities.

The life cycle of this species is highly adapted to aquatic environments. Females typically oviposit into the submerged parts of plants. The nymphs go through several developmental stages, resembling the adults but lacking fully developed wings. Their rapid reproductive rate allows them to colonize new aquatic areas effectively during the warm season.

Feeding damage occurs when the insects pierce the epidermis of leaves and stems. This mechanical injury results in chlorotic spots and stunted growth of the affected plants. Over time, these small lesions can serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, potentially leading to widespread wilting or rotting of sensitive plant tissues.

In controlled environments like hydroponics, installing fine mesh screens and maintaining water movement can deter the settling of these insects.

Selective insecticides or biological controls, such as introducing natural predators (like aquatic beetles), are preferred over broad-spectrum chemicals.
