Metallus is a genus of insects belonging to the family Tenthredinidae (common sawflies). These pests are well-known among horticulturists for their ability to damage various fruit-bearing plants, specifically those within the Rosaceae family. The raspberry leaf-mining sawfly is the most representative species, causing localized but potentially severe damage to foliage in berry plantations.

The host range of Metallus predominantly includes raspberries (Rubus idaeus) and blackberries. Because the larvae are endophagous, meaning they feed inside the leaf tissue, they are protected from many external environmental factors and standard contact pesticides. This specialized feeding habit makes them particularly challenging to manage once the mining process has begun.

The life cycle of this pest typically follows a seasonal pattern. Adult sawflies emerge in the spring to lay eggs directly into the leaf parenchyma. After hatching, the larvae develop within the leaf, creating tunnels known as mines. Depending on the climate and specific species, the pest may complete one or more generations per season, overwintering in the soil as larvae within cocoons.

The damage caused by Metallus is characterized by distinct leaf mines. Initially appearing as small, faint spots, these mines expand into irregular brown patches as the larvae grow. Heavy infestations can lead to significant photosynthetic loss, yellowing, premature leaf senescence, and overall plant decline, which directly impacts fruit set and the vigor of the canes for the following year.

Effective control measures require a combination of preventative and corrective strategies:

• Sanitary maintenance, including the collection and destruction of fallen leaves in autumn.
• Tilling the soil around the bushes to destroy overwintering cocoons.
• Application of systemic insecticides timed with the egg-hatching period.
• Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids that target sawfly larvae.
• Maintaining optimal plant health to ensure the crops can recover from mild infestations.
