Host plants and damage: The pest primarily targets Rubus species, especially raspberries. The larvae live as miners within the leaf tissue, consuming the parenchyma while leaving the epidermis intact. This results in the formation of irregular blotch-like mines on the leaf surface. Heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, reduced photosynthesis, and weakened plant vigor, which ultimately impacts the yield.

Biology and lifecycle: The adult stage is a small, dark-colored sawfly. Females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue. The larvae remain inside the leaf throughout their development, which provides them with significant protection. The number of generations per year depends on regional climate conditions. The insect typically overwinters as a larva in the soil, pupating in the spring before emerging as adults.

Cultural control methods: Good sanitation is essential for managing the raspberry leaf miner. Clearing and destroying fallen leaves during the autumn helps reduce the overwintering population.
