Metcalfiella

Metcalfiella is a genus of insects belonging to the treehopper family (Membracidae) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are well-known for their unique morphological feature—a highly developed pronotum that often takes on exaggerated, thorn-like shapes, providing them with excellent camouflage against the bark and stems of their host plants.

These pests predominantly affect woody plants, including various fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. They exhibit a preference for young, succulent growth, making them a significant concern for nurseries and young orchards. The nymphs and adults feed by extracting plant sap, which can compromise the structural integrity of the affected plant parts.

The life cycle of the insect involves the female depositing eggs into the stems or bark of the host plant using a specialized, saw-like ovipositor. This behavior is crucial for their survival, as the eggs remain protected inside the plant tissue throughout the winter or unfavorable conditions. After hatching, the nymphs go through several molting stages, steadily increasing their feeding intensity.

Damage caused by Metcalfiella is twofold: direct feeding damage and injury caused by oviposition. The feeding activity leads to stunted growth, wilting of shoots, and overall plant decline. Furthermore, the slits made during egg-laying provide entry points for pathogens, potentially leading to necrosis or the introduction of secondary fungal and bacterial infections.
