Metoponium is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Tenebrionidae, which includes species recognized as significant agricultural pests. These insects are part of the order Coleoptera and have developed specific physiological adaptations that allow them to thrive in soil environments, where they pose a persistent threat to various crops.
These pests primarily target cereal crops, as well as various technical and vegetable seeds. The damage is largely caused by the larvae, which inhabit the topsoil layers. By feeding on roots, root collars, and germinating seeds, the larvae disrupt the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth or plant death.
