Description

Metriochroa is a genus of insects in the order Lepidoptera, belonging to the family Gracillariidae. The most economically significant species is Metriochroa latifoliella, which is widely recognized as a specialized leaf-mining pest of olive trees.

This pest exclusively targets olive trees (Olea europaea). It is primarily found in regions where olives are cultivated, where its larvae feed on the internal tissues of leaves, causing structural and physiological damage that can affect tree vigor and fruit production.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moth lays eggs on the leaf surface. Once the larvae hatch, they bore directly into the leaf tissue, creating serpentine or blotch-shaped mines where they complete their development, often remaining protected from external environmental factors.

The damage is characterized by visible leaf mines that turn brown and necrotic as the larvae consume the parenchyma. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf abscission, which weakens the tree, reduces photosynthetic surface area, and can ultimately result in significant yield losses for the grower.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to controlling Metriochroa. This includes regular scouting using pheromone traps to time interventions, prompt removal and destruction of heavily infested plant material, and the use of selective biorational insecticides. Encouraging natural biological control by protecting populations of parasitic wasps is also essential for long-term population suppression.
