Spotted knapweed seed moth

The spotted knapweed seed moth (Metzneria paucipunctella) is a moth of the family Gelechiidae. It is widely recognized in agronomy and ecology for its relationship with plants in the genus Centaurea. While it can be considered a pest for certain agricultural crops, it has also been studied as a biological control agent for invasive weeds like spotted knapweed in parts of North America.

This insect primarily infests species within the Asteraceae family, specifically focusing on knapweeds. The larvae are seed feeders; they bore into the developing flower heads, consuming the seeds and the receptacle tissue. This feeding behavior directly reduces the reproductive capacity of the host plant, preventing it from producing a viable seed bank.

The life cycle of Metzneria paucipunctella involves a complete metamorphosis. Adult moths emerge in early summer, mate, and lay eggs on the bracts of the developing flower heads. Upon hatching, the larvae move into the flower head to feed. They remain protected within the head throughout their larval development, eventually pupating inside the structure, where they often overwinter before emerging as adults the following season.

The damage caused by this moth is usually internal and might not be immediately visible from the outside until the flower head shows signs of premature decay or stunted development. In cases where seed production is the primary agricultural goal, the economic impact is significant. Farmers and land managers look for clear signs of frass or webbing within the flower heads to detect the presence of the larvae.

Management strategies focus on cultural practices and targeted interventions. Monitoring populations during the flowering period is essential. In agricultural settings, crop rotation and the destruction of infested plant debris after the harvest help to reduce overwintering populations. When necessary, selective chemical treatments applied during the egg-laying stage can effectively reduce the moth population before larvae move into protected locations within the flower heads.
