The Brazilian borer (Micrapate brasiliensis) is a destructive species of wood-boring beetle belonging to the Bostrichidae family. Classified within the order Coleoptera, this insect is well-adapted for boring into the dense, lignified tissues of various plants. Its biological traits allow it to thrive in diverse environments, making it a persistent concern for farmers and plantation managers in its native range.

This pest targets a wide variety of woody plants and shrubs, with a notable impact on grapevines and various fruit-bearing trees. By infesting the stems and branches of these crops, the beetle disrupts the essential internal structures required for plant health. Even robust plants can be severely compromised if the infestation density is high enough to cause structural failure.

The life cycle of Micrapate brasiliensis is primarily spent within the wood, which complicates detection. Adult females bore into the plant to lay eggs, and upon hatching, the larvae tunnel extensively through the internal tissues. This feeding behavior is the primary driver of the pest's impact, as the larvae consume the internal woody structure, effectively hollowing out the plant's support system.

Damage caused by this beetle includes the formation of small, circular exit holes on the surface of branches and trunks. This is often accompanied by the presence of frass or wood powder near the entry points. The physiological stress caused by these tunnels leads to wilting, branch dieback, and in severe cases, the death of the entire plant, significantly impacting overall crop yields.
