Description
Systematic position: The European pine sawfly (Microdiprion pallipes) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae. It is a recognized defoliator that specifically targets coniferous tree species within forest ecosystems and plantations.
Host plants: This pest primarily infests various species of pine, with Pinus sylvestris being its main host. The larvae are specialized in consuming pine needles, causing widespread defoliation in local patches that can expand rapidly if conditions are favorable for the pest.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle usually consists of one or two generations per year depending on the climate. The species overwinters as eggs embedded within the pine needles. Once hatched in the spring, the larvae feed gregariously. Upon reaching maturity, they spin cocoons in which they pupate, eventually emerging as adults to start a new cycle.
Damage and economic impact: The damage is caused by larvae that feed on needles, often starting from the top of the canopy and moving downwards. Heavy infestations lead to extensive needle loss, which stunts tree growth, weakens the overall health of the forest, and makes the trees highly susceptible to opportunistic secondary pests like bark beetles.
Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Microdiprion. This includes encouraging natural enemies such as parasitic wasps and predatory birds. In cases of significant outbreaks, biological control agents (like baculovirus sprays) or selective chemical insecticides are used to minimize population numbers and protect the canopy health.
