Systematic position. Micronematus is a genus of insects within the order Hymenoptera, specifically belonging to the Tenthredinidae family, commonly known as sawflies. These insects are classified under the subfamily Nematinae. They are recognized for their specialized feeding habits, which often impact the health and vigor of specific host plants in both forest and garden ecosystems.

Host plants. The primary hosts for Micronematus are species within the Salicaceae family. Willows (Salix spp.) and poplars (Populus spp.) are the most frequent targets for these insects. Their presence is often detected in nurseries, willow plantations, and ornamental landscapes where their host plants are grown in significant numbers, providing a stable habitat for their larval development.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult sawflies emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs within the host's leaf tissue. The larvae, which resemble caterpillars, are voracious feeders and grow through several instars before descending to the soil to pupate in protective cocoons for the overwintering phase.

Damage and economic impact. The larvae feed on the foliage of the host plants, often causing severe defoliation. Early-stage larvae may create small holes, while older larvae can consume entire leaves, leaving only the primary veins. Excessive defoliation significantly reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, leading to stunted growth, loss of vitality, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or environmental stress.

Control measures. Management strategies should be integrated to minimize environmental impact. Preventive measures include soil cultivation in the autumn to expose pupae to predators and winter conditions. In cases of significant outbreaks, targeted application of contact or systemic insecticides is necessary. Encouraging natural predators, such as parasitic wasps and predatory beetles, also plays a crucial role in suppressing populations naturally.
