Description
The genus Microtus, commonly known as voles, belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Cricetidae. These small mammals are significant agricultural pests globally, recognized for their high reproductive potential and ability to cause extensive damage to various crops throughout the vegetation season.
Voles demonstrate a wide diet range, affecting cereal grains, legumes, root vegetables like sugar beets and potatoes, and forage grasses. Furthermore, during winter months when food is scarce, they frequently girdle the stems and trunks of young fruit trees and ornamental shrubs, leading to significant plant mortality.
The biology of the vole is characterized by extremely rapid population growth. Females can produce several litters per year, and young individuals reach reproductive maturity within weeks. This explosive breeding cycle makes them difficult to control once a population outbreak has initiated in agricultural fields.
The damage is primarily caused by feeding on the root systems, green stems, and seeds of cultivated plants. A high density of voles leads to reduced yield and structural damage to the soil due to extensive tunnel networks. Their presence also promotes the spread of various plant diseases and leads to post-harvest losses.
Integrated pest management strategies for voles include:
- Deep tillage and soil cultivation to destroy burrow systems.
- Maintaining field hygiene by eliminating weed shelters.
- Application of rodenticides specifically targeted into the burrow openings.
- Encouraging natural predators such as raptors, owls, and foxes to populate the area.
