The Reed vole (Microtus fortis) belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Cricetidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in East Asian regions, known for its high reproductive rates and its ability to thrive in various habitats, particularly near water bodies and cultivated fields.

This rodent is highly polyphagous, causing damage to a wide range of crops. It feeds on cereal grains, soybeans, various vegetables, and perennial grasses. During the winter, when food sources are scarce, the Reed vole often attacks young fruit trees, gnawing on the bark, which can effectively kill or severely damage the saplings.

Their foraging activities lead to significant stand reduction and economic losses, as they target both the vegetative biomass and the structural root system of crops.

Effective management strategies combine cultural and chemical control measures. Key practices include deep autumn plowing to destroy nesting burrows, maintaining field margins free of debris and weeds, and the targeted use of registered rodenticides. Additionally, biological control methods, such as encouraging natural predators like raptors by placing perches, are recommended for sustainable population suppression.
