Root vole

The root vole (Microtus oeconomus) is a small rodent belonging to the Cricetidae family. It is known for its ability to occupy damp habitats, including grasslands, marshes, and agricultural fields. As a primary agricultural pest, it can cause severe economic losses by damaging various crops across its range, which spans the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere.

This pest affects a wide array of agricultural products, including cereal grains like wheat and rye, as well as legumes, root crops, and forage grasses. Because the root vole is active year-round, its feeding habits impact both summer crops and winter-sown fields. The damage is particularly severe in areas with high soil moisture where these voles thrive.

The biology of the root vole is marked by high reproductive potential. Females are capable of producing several litters per year, with each litter containing up to 10 pups. This rapid reproduction allows populations to reach outbreak levels quickly. They construct complex burrow systems that provide shelter and storage for their harvested food supplies throughout the winter.

Damage caused by root voles includes gnawing at the base of stems, destroying root systems, and consuming grain. In fields, this leads to thinning of crops and the destruction of large patches of vegetation. Aside from direct consumption, their burrowing activity disrupts soil structure and can expose plant roots to drought, further decreasing overall crop health and yield quality.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include:

• Deep tillage of fields to destroy burrow networks.
• Clearing weeds and debris from field margins to reduce shelter.
• Using crop rotation to interrupt their food source.
• Applying rodenticides strictly according to local regulations.
• Encouraging natural predators such as hawks and owls to nest in the vicinity.
