Eastern European vole

The Eastern European vole (Microtus rossiaemeridionalis) is a small rodent belonging to the Cricetidae family. It is a highly adaptable species widely distributed across European steppes and forest-steppes. Although it is taxonomically distinct, it is often grouped with common voles due to their near-identical physical appearance, which poses challenges for specific field pest management.

These rodents are significant agricultural pests that target a wide range of crops, including winter cereals, perennial grasses, sugar beets, and various vegetables. They consume both green plant parts and seeds. Their feeding habits during the cold season, specifically gnawing on roots and crowns, often lead to the irreversible destruction of affected plants.

The biology of Microtus rossiaemeridionalis is characterized by extreme reproductive potential. With multiple litters per year and a short generation interval, their population can surge rapidly under favorable conditions. They live in underground burrow systems that provide protection from predators and harsh weather, allowing them to remain active throughout the entire winter.

Damage caused by these voles is typically observed as patches of barren soil or thinned crop stands in the field. Beyond direct consumption of plants, they degrade the quality of harvested products and interfere with mechanical harvesting processes. High infestation densities can lead to significant economic losses for farmers, necessitating early detection and intervention.
