Systematic position: The European pine vole (Microtus subterraneus) belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Cricetidae. It is a small mammal known for its fossorial lifestyle, preferring to remain underground, which makes detection and monitoring particularly difficult for farmers and agronomists.
Affected crops and damage: This pest causes significant economic losses by damaging the root systems of vegetable crops, cereals, and grasses. It frequently targets ornamental plants and fruit tree saplings, consuming the bark and roots in the subterranean zone.
