Systematic position: The European pine vole (Microtus subterraneus) belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Cricetidae. It is a small mammal known for its fossorial lifestyle, preferring to remain underground, which makes detection and monitoring particularly difficult for farmers and agronomists.

Affected crops and damage: This pest causes significant economic losses by damaging the root systems of vegetable crops, cereals, and grasses. It frequently targets ornamental plants and fruit tree saplings, consuming the bark and roots in the subterranean zone. Damage often goes unnoticed until the plant wilts or collapses entirely due to root destruction.

Biology and development: These voles are highly prolific, with breeding cycles that span most of the year. They create complex, multi-layered tunnel systems that provide protection against weather and predators. Their ability to remain active in subterranean tunnels allows them to survive in various soil types, from garden beds to extensive fields.

Economic importance: The vole's destructive behavior leads to reduced crop density and severe plant stress. Beyond direct consumption of plant tissues, their tunneling activities create air gaps that dry out the soil and disturb the root-soil interface, preventing the crop from absorbing nutrients and moisture effectively, significantly lowering total yields.

Protection measures: Controlling Microtus subterraneus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on habitat modification and population reduction:
