Milesia

Milesia is a genus of large, bee-mimicking flies belonging to the family Syrphidae, commonly known as hoverflies or flower flies. While adults are famous for their role as pollinators and their striking mimicry of hornets to deter predators, their larval stage is associated with saproxylic behavior, meaning they develop within decaying wood or moist organic matter.

The biology of Milesia revolves around the larval stage, which thrives in rot-holes or damp, decaying wood of old trees. Because they specialize in environments where decomposition is already occurring, they are rarely primary pests. However, their presence is a clear indicator that the plant is suffering from underlying issues such as heart rot or significant bark damage.

Their impact on crops is indirect. By inhabiting rotting wood, the larvae can further degrade the structural integrity of the tree's trunk or main branches. This degradation prevents the plant from healing its wounds and creates an ideal environment for secondary pests and various wood-decaying fungi to colonize the tree further.

The lifecycle of this insect involves complete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs in crevices of bark or into existing hollows. The larvae then feed on the decaying organic matter for an extended period before pupating within the substrate. Due to their protected living environment, traditional topical chemical treatments are largely ineffective against them.

Effective management strategies focus on orchard sanitation and tree health improvement:

• Perform regular sanitary pruning to remove damaged or rotting wood.
• Clean and treat tree hollows to prevent further accumulation of decay.
• Remove old stumps and piles of rotting organic waste near the garden.
• Seal open wounds on tree trunks with appropriate wound-healing agents.
• Ensure adequate tree nutrition to promote natural defense mechanisms.
